A U.S. Government agency overseeing nursing homes, The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid, finalized rules for nursing homes that will be phased in over the next two years.
Some of the new rules that are now in effect include the following:
- Roommates: Both residents may choose and agree who will be their roommate.
- Meals: The facility must make snacks and meals available to a resident when that person wants to eat, and not just at designated and limited meal times.
- Visitors: Residents may chose who can visit and the times for the visit. No longer are there limited visiting times.
- Discharge: If a resident is in a nursing home that participates in the Medicaid program, that facility may not discharge that resident for nonpayment of their bill if a Medicaid application is being considered by the state Department of Health and Welfare.
These are great improvements for nursing home residents, their friends and families.
