So you’ve decided to give something meaningful — say, an original Norman Rockwell painting — to a charity. Before you do, here’s what you need to know.

Three things matter: FIT, FUNDING, and DOCUMENTATION

FIT means the charity’s mission has to actually match the gift. Picture this — a Rockwell painting going to a museum devoted to 1920s fashion. Wrong match. The IRS actually has a name for this — it’s called “related use.” Get the match right, and you may qualify for a full fair-market-value tax deduction. Get it wrong, and that deduction shrinks significantly. So think regional history museums, American art institutions — places where the piece genuinely belongs.

Now, FUNDING. Here’s something people often overlook: owning a valuable piece like this isn’t free for a charity. Storing it, insuring it, conserving it — that all costs money, and plenty of nonprofits simply don’t have it lying around. That’s why a common and smart practice is pairing your gift with cash — roughly ten to fifteen percent of the appraised value — to cover framing, insurance, and conservation. It’s what turns you from a well-meaning donor into a true partner in preserving the piece.

Fit. Funding. And one more thing — DOCUMENTATION. A qualified appraisal and the right paperwork make sure everything holds up.

Get those three right, and your gift doesn’t just get accepted — it gets preserved, for generations.
