Hospice: Why Starting Early is Better

by Susan M. Graham, Certified Elder Law Attorney, Senior Edge Legal, Boise, Idaho

Many families wait until the last weeks of life to start hospice care. This is a mistake. Starting hospice earlier—when someone has about six months to live—helps everyone.

What You Get With Early Hospice

  • Better pain control – Doctors have time to find the right medicines to keep your loved one comfortable
  • Less suffering – Help with breathing problems, nausea, and anxiety
  • 24/7 support – Call a hospice nurse anytime, day or night
  • Fewer hospital trips – Stay home instead of going to the emergency room
  • Help for the whole family – Social workers, counselors, and chaplains provide support
  • Training for caregivers – Learn how to care for your loved one at home

More Time for What Matters

When someone is comfortable and not in pain, they can spend quality time with family. You get chances to:

  • Talk about important things
  • Share memories and stories
  • Say goodbye in your own way
  • Make final wishes come true

Common Worries

“Doesn’t hospice mean giving up?”

No. Hospice means choosing comfort over treatments that aren’t working. Studies show hospice patients often live longer than those getting aggressive treatment.

“How much does it cost?”

Medicare and most insurance plans cover hospice 100%. This includes all medicines, equipment, and nurse visits.

“Can you add more care?”

Of course, you can provide additional nursing care and Death Doula’s to help your loved one and their family have a “good death.”  A “good death” is subjective, but often involves dying with dignity, pain-free, and surrounded by loved ones, with personal preferences and values respected.

The Main Point

Waiting until the last weeks means missing out on weeks or months of better care and precious time together. The biggest regret families have is not starting hospice sooner. Don’t wait—talk to your doctor about hospice when you still have time to benefit from it.
